Is Blog Commenting a Good Strategy to Earn Traffic?
Yes, blog commenting is a good strategy to earn traffic but it depends on how you do it.
Some bloggers leave comments that are not related to the topic because they are just after the link which is wrong and will eventually be marked as spam. It is important that you leave good and meaningful comments because that’s what gonna get you clicks from the traffic.
If your strategy is leaving fast comments to get some clicks from the traffic then better stop doing that. Fast comments are usually the one that are rushing to make the comment because they want to be the first one to leave a comment, thinking they’ll get more traffic. Doing that way, you’re just risking your comment to be marked as spam.
How to convert those clicks to loyal visitors? You should have a good content to make them come back for more. Blog commenting is not that effective if your website doesn’t have a good content because those clicks will just go to waste. That is why we hear a lot the phrase “Content is King“.
Content is King but content is somehow useless if you don’t know how to market it. What’s the use of your content if not a lot of people able to read it? Making a good content and marketing is the perfect combination to make your website popular.
Blog commenting is also the place where you can build a relationship with your fellow bloggers. We already know that many people that leave comments are also bloggers so this is a chance to build relationships. Building relationships with these people will get you more traffic.
That’s just my opinion so if you have something to say then just leave a comment.

Friend.
Whether you leave a good comment or a “rushed” one, the fact is… As long as it is approved you will at least get a few visits back to your site.
The “rushed” comment, because it is first, will get the most views back to its site.
Good Luck.

I disagree with Carl. If all you want is a “visit” to your blog or website then trashing someone else’s blog with mindless comments might be a good idea.
If you want someone to visit your blog to read your blog after reading your comment then you better make sure you are adding value to the blog post with your comment because that will help you get a “reader” instead of just a “visitor.”

@Zahid Lilani
I totally agree with you, it’s not like what Carl said to just leave a comment for the sake that it’ll be approved.
And besides, bad comment = lesser chance to be clicked even if you’re the first one to leave a comment.
Thanks for leaving a good comment and giving more information about the topic.

I disagree with Carl too. While I appreciate anyone who visits my blog, I don’t want someone coming and not reading what I have blogged about.

and then there are the people like me who like to place their anchor text in for the name to get a higher quality backlink. With this, you have to realize the chances of being approved are a lot lower than if you use a legitimate sounding name. That’s the hard part, bloggers need to realize who is coming back, and who isn’t. If a site is turning down your comments, leave. If you find a site you enjoy reading and lets you use anchor text then you may want to stay.
As a side note, on some blogs, regardless of comment content you will get the most clicks to your site for having the first comment such as on johnchows.

@Free Microsoft Points
Thanks for the additional information.
Yeah, you’ll have a lower chance of getting approved if you use keywords rather than your real name. I’m sure other bloggers will understand why others are doing it and will eventually approve comments like those as long as it is related to the topic and good.

I don’t think it is. If you are talking about backlinks, I would say yes. But traffic is hardly a gain. Commenting does help the commenter a lot as far as building his reputation. That’s what i do. In time I believe traffic will eventually come. But not from commenting per se.

I agree. For the most part. My blog gets tons of comments and 90% are spam comments and they are absolutely meaningless comments that are unrelated to the post. So they get deleted immediately. If someone leaves a comment that is related to the post and they make an honest attempt at being interactive, I will leave their comment. This helps them a great deal as the post is in the archives and bots visit and revisit the site daily, sometimes hourly and so the post gets indexed with their comment embedded. So leaving junk comments doesn’t create any real traffic. Junk comments doesn’t create the traffic a site needs to be successful or make sales anyway. Relative clicks from relative comments = a valuable visitor.

Well, this doesn’t really pertain to blog commenting, but when I’m on a forum if I post a signature link in a forum that is not relevant, I sometimes get criticized for having a link that is not relevant to the forum. If the signature link IS relevant, I’m sometimes accused of trying to hoard traffic from that particular forum. Do you ever run into this problem when blog commenting?

@battle ready swords
Haven’t experienced something like that. That’s your sig so you have the freedom to put any links you want in your signature as long as it’s not something against the rules.

@Dave
90% are spam is a lot, you should consider installing a wordpress anti-spam plugin like akismet. That’s be a big help so you wont have a hard time deleting those.

The key is to do it yourself. I have used it to good effect for several sites but it takes time. The rewards are far from instant.
If you are looking for traffic then target very busy blogs in your niche. If you are looking for link juice then target dofollow blogs.
If you outsource it to a spamhaus or use automated generic commenting then it will do you absolutely no good at all.

Is it simply a matter of just having great content? If that’s the case I would further that point by suggesting its a matter of good content coupled with open dialogue that makes for a truly great blog. The more that your audience can interact with you (while not having to be live), while exchanging brilliant ideas, and the more others can learn then, IMO, the better your credibility is received.
Those are my thoughts and thanks for allowing me to post on your blog.
