List of Things to Avoid When Designing your Website
A lot of people spend a lot of time on designing their websites like adding flash logos, intros, etc. Adding flash to your site is not a good idea if you’re after SEO (Search Engine Optimization) because search engines can’t read flash content (the only flash content that i know that search engines can read are flash movies). So you’d better spend you’re time on making a unique and good content than doing those things because people are after your content and not the design. You can see a lot of websites that are very famous but design is simple so spend your time wisely and spend more time on the content than the design of your website. Just put in mind that you’re site should be user-friendly by avoiding the things below:
- Avoid using Flash content
As much as possible don’t use flash because it increases the loading time of your website and you may lose some visitors because of that. Some people just don’t like to see something that says “Click here to Proceed” or where they will wait for 20 seconds because of your flash intro. From what i’ve observed, most flash sites fail when it comes to SEO. - Avoid colors that will make your content hard to read
This is a very important thing to consider when desinging your site, as what i’ve said, content is what people after when visiting your site so you should choose colors that will make your content readable. This is very basic when it comes to designing a website but still some people make this mistake. - Avoid using a lot of images
Choose what images to put in your website wisely. Only put image in your site if it can help your visitors otherwise you’re just wasting a precious space in your website. - Avoid placing navigation in a hard to see place
Navigation is very important and should be placed in a place where it can be easily seen. The best place for the navigation would be at the top (under your header logo). People always look for the navigation when they want to get more information from your website. The basic things that should be in the navigation are Home, About Us and, Contact Us. - Avoid auto-play audio and video
People usually get annoyed when they visit a website where they hear someone speaking about their company or some background music. I myself don’t like to visit websites that have auto-play audio and video. People usually close or press back when they encounter websites with auto-play audio or video. If ever you want to place a video or audio, don’t make it auto-play so visitors will have their freedom if they want to hear or view it. - Avoid making your links hard to see by choosing the wrong colors
Links are always what the people are looking for when they are finished reading so you should choose the right color for your links so people will easily see it. The most common color for the links is blue (#0000FF). As much as possible and if it looks good with your design then use blue for your links.

[...] For those who have flash websites, you no longer have to worry about not being crawled by search engines because Adobe has shared its flash technology to Yahoo and Google so that these search engines will be able to crawl flash websites.Search engines now will be able to read text in a SWF file. SWF is short for Small Web Format. But for me, having a lot of flash contents in a website is not a good idea because it will lengthen the loading time of your website and visitors will not be happy with that. That is one thing to avoid when making a website. To know more things to avoid when making a website you can see my article: List of Things to Avoid When Designing your Website [...]
